You might remember that I posted about the first two stages of the process I have developed for stucco-stencilling walls. Check it out here in French house salon.
I have now completed stage 3 and it looks even better than I hoped. You may know that I did lots of research on stencilled patterns in old village houses and thought long & hard on whether this kind of flourish was appropriate.
I did NOT want the ubiquitous flat, single colour stencilled effect of the 1980’s
This raised stucco- style stencil design and subtle colours suits these old, raw, colour washed lime plastered walls of ours.
The French phrase “mettre on valeur” suits what we have done here better that any English words might, meaning “to develop, emphasise, highlight, show off to advantage”

stage one above- stage two below left- stage three below right
I basically applied a very small amount of clear furniture soft wax (Liberon) with a small cloth. working from the edges of each part of the design inward.
It’s a subtle difference (can you see it-right?) but I am happy with it now
Wow. I’m going stencil shopping. I never thought I’d say that. Maybe I’m not. Maybe a certain plastered beam is talking so loud I just think it’s me. Either way, I can’t wait.

Yes, plastered beams, perfect for stencilling.
In the cave I plan a subtle stucco stencil also. You could probably be less subtle, you have a grand architect designed house and mouldings already in situ

I love it. It appears subtle and chic rather than folksy and tawdry …. I can see a revival in stencilling on the horizon with you the Pied Piper 💫

Thank you. I am aiming for refined rustic, rather than that currently fashionable self-consciously primitive peasant distressed to the point of dirty vibe which seems to appeal to many right now.
Each to their own…

You have it right …. Grunge interiors will go the way of grunge chic …. Rapidly discarded by those who do not wish to either live or dress like landfill 😂

Very cool! My mom would be all over this. She was a wall-stenciling queen (in the ’60s).

Very avant-garde then! I didn’t see any wall stencils till the 70’s
Clearly your mum was a true creative.

She wanted to be a painter (I have a couple of her paintings). She turned to decorating the house. Budget times + creative outlet = stenciled walls.
