Episode 133- Dream Lantern

I have been thinking about lighting. A lot.

All rooms at the village house  are having-

  1. Practical (new electric wiring) light fittings and

2. Authentic and atmospheric candle fittings

Today’s debate is on what to fit in the second staircase to the bedroom floor. It’s high enough there to have something on a chain; and because we have taken off the door between the salon and the stairs, whatever we hang will need to work with the colours and general ambience in the salon.

Cast metal lanterns are a key element for me in creating a French feel- see below left from www.linenandlavender.net

The Mayor has installed black cast iron scrolled decorative street lanterns in the heart of the village. The die is cast.

I have finally settled on a very Moorish/Moroccan stained glass lantern with more than a touch of the antique French one top left found on the Antiques Atlas website- http://www.antiques-atlas.com/search/?q=lantern&action=search . It’s currently in a box underneath a mountain of crates in the garage. You will just have to wait for the reveal – sorry…..

There is a guy on Etsy that restores old lanterns, when he is not building new ones. He is located just outside Niort but he ships all over the world. His prices are reasonable and he’ll change things out for you — make a pendant a table lamp, that kind of thing. Owen Duggan: of course I can’t find his Etsy shop right now but if you PM me I’ll send you his email address.

And praise to the mayor for the choice of the town lighting…I know you can’t vote for him but do let him know you appreciate his choice…would probably be a much appreciated change from the complaints mayors get…

Yo! Love the lantern 🙂 I’m all about lighting too at the moment – so so critical to get it right. I have a dear friend (once upon a time my partner til we decided that we actually destined to be friends not wreckage) who is an architect – he is in his 60s now and still says lighting is his biggest challenge and his most common failing point.

And that top left lantern? Source? If there is no source, well, it’s in danger of going missing. Seriously, the owner should Lo-Jack it. I’m a big lantern fan and that may be the best so far.
