Goodbye Mr Bowie

So, what a shock to wake up to and what a talent lost to this world .
A true artist who brought together music, theatre,  mime, film, literature, poetry , art and an extraordinary level of invention.

To us Art School creatures of the late 60’s & early 70’s, he told us it was entirely OK to step outside what the world expected from our inbetween generation and plough our own furrows.
The best live gig ever ( and I’ve seen a few) was the Ziggy Stardust tour experience.

I still recall my mother’s face when my then boyfriend Brian ( who was fortunately possessed of Bowie’s physique and cheekbones) cut off his waist length hippy locks and adopted the Bowie cut and hair colour (orange)  and turned up to pick me up for a date circa 1972 sporting shaved  eyebrows, a skin tight stripey Mr Freedom jumper, white dungarees ( no underwear) and six inch platform shoes…

I was amazed to hear Jeremy Vine play “Five Years” in full on Radio 2 this morning ; particularly in view of the what would now be considered non PC lyrics. Good on you JV , to play this non-pop track to those who truly understand.

Oddly, Trev had been out and bought me a copy of the new album “black star” released on Bowie’s 69th birthday (last Friday) we had commented on it’s black on black almost unreadable sleeve notes.

I hardly dare play it.

As “the girl with the mousy hair” (my son tells me that’s my song) I say, thank you for the soundtrack to my youth David…..and is there Life on Mars?
Goodnight and sweet dreams
The world will not see his like again.

  1. A touching piece. Well done. Never easy to do justice at times like this.

And your mom let you leave the house with him? I wish I had had your mom.

I have never done the fan thing, so apart from noting that Bowie had an apparently stable marriage, I didn’t realize what a class act the guy was until I saw an interview he gave shortly before his death. Another good guy, gone too soon.

    • Yes, she let me leave the house but instructed me to dump him stating ” He’s not what I would call a man” and “Come back when it’s dark, I don’t want the neighbours to see him”.

Being A Bit Odd myself (my mother would happily have expanded on that a little less kindly if she were around to do so ), I always appreciated the individual individual

This is what I wrote for my FaceBook family and friends this morning :
I’ve only just picked up the news. Damn you early nights. I knew him for a while – the only person amongst all those I was fortunate enough to clean boots for who rivalled Freddie in the sheer magnetism stakes. He was a beauteous creature from another world, a living breathing artwork and the world is dimmer without him. RIP Ziggie, Aladdin, Thin White Duke, Goblin King and kick some stardust in heaven
Your vignettes are wonderful and as an art student in the late 60s you were in the front line …. he was Art, was he not?
